May 2019 FROM THE PRINCIPAL It always amazes me just how quickly a school year flies by. It feels like we were just welcoming your children for the first day of 2018-19, and now we are bringing this year to a close with the many special events that mark the end of our time together for this school year. That is particularly true of our sixth graders who are wrapping up their last learning experiences under the Harman roof. Later this week, you will tour the halls of Harman to admire the amazing artwork created under the leadership of Ms. Kuntz. Undoubtedly, you will be truly impressed by the final products of these talented and creative young people. Let us not forgot, however, that there were many lessons, many hours, and many challenges in the process of creating these beautiful pieces, much like our sixth graders who are still in process of becoming the beautiful young people they are meant to be. We hope as they continue on their journeys, they will look back fondly on their time with us at Harman and know we have been part of their stories and contributors to their process. Thank you for sharing them with us! HARMAN HAPPENINGS
Congratulations Congratulations to the Harman Blue Team for winning the first ever joint Harman and Smith Lumberjack Reading List Battle of the Books!
Special thanks to Ms. Ford and Mrs. Small for inspiring these students to engage in reading so many great literary pieces! Special thanks to Miss Jacqui from Wright Memorial Library for moderating! And congratulations to all of the Smith and Harman students who took on this challenge! May is the month of giving at Harman Our students have hearts for giving, and we have a special event to give to others planned for each week for the remainder of the year. We wanted to give you an overview in advance so you can participate in whatever ways are comfortable for your family. Up first, Friday, May 10 will be a PJ day at Harman. With the donation of a new blanket or even a $1 donation to Warm Hugs, students may participate in a fun pj day to raise money for the supplies to make blankets during our Timber Family Day to benefit the organization created by a Harman alum. Still to come, a bake sale to support a special camp experience for children, a slime sale for water in Africa, and a hat day to sponsor meals through One Bistro. Thank you for supporting our students in their mission to help others. Timber Family Day Another exciting year of learning and growing together is coming to a close. Our final culminating activity will be our Timber Family Day on the last student day, Thursday, May 30. We will begin the fun with our annual Hot Dog lunch from 11:30 am-12:30 pm and follow with an afternoon of fun activities and challenges together from 12:30-2:00 pm. More specific details will be sent soon. We hope you can join us! Intra-District Enrollment Information
CURRICULUM CROSSING
They do what in library? When you think back to your own school library experiences growing up, you likely remember checking out books and reading. While inspiring a love for great literature is still an important part of students' time with Ms. Ford, there is so much more that happens in their weekly time with her. Students develop keyboarding skills, learn about digital citizenship and digital safety, and create projects to integrate their digital work with literature such as book trailers to be shared with others. All of that along with individual book talks with Ms. Ford by those who take on the Lumberjack Reading List challenge. That's a lot of important work! NEWS FROM THE NURSE
